Although swing dancing began as Lindy Hop in 1930s
Harlem, it has grown and changed over time. The dance was done to all sorts
of music: big band, small group jazz, blues, boogie woogie, rock and roll, etc.,
and each type of music affected how the steps were done. Each generation of
swing dancers has contributed to the variety of steps and styles of swing dance.
We believe that all the permutations are what makes swing dance uniquely American,
but also difficult to master. We recommend the following path for beginner students:
start with the basic six-count rhythm patterns, progress to lead and follow
skills, then to the eight-count Whip or Swing-Out and Circle patterns, then
finally on to Charleston. Once you’re familiar with these basic rhythm
patterns you’ll have a solid foundation from which to explore the many
steps and styles featured on Unlimited Swing.
Enjoy!
